Islamabad, Sept 3: At least 43 people were killed in powerful explosions in three different cities in Pakistan Friday, two days after triple blasts ripped through a religious procession in Lahore killing 35 people.
Large congregations mark Jumat-ul-Vida

Srinagar: Large congregational prayers marked Jumat-ul-Vida, the last
Friday of the holy month of Ramadhan, in Kashmir valley and Jammu.
The day was also observed as Yaum-e-Quds and Yaum-e- Kashmir in
response to the call by Hurriyat Conference.

In Srinagar—the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir— the biggest
congregation was held at the historic grand Jamia Masjid in the heart
of the old city. Many thousand people, including a large number of
women, joined the Friday prayers. Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat
Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, addressed the gathering. Soon after
the prayers, Mirwaiz led thousands of people as they marched towards
‘Dastageer Sahib’ Khaniyar and dispersed there peacefully.

The veteran leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, led thousands of people
after offering congregational prayers at Pather Masjid in the old
city. Press Bureau of India correspondent quoting eyewitnesses said
that soon after the prayers, Geelani, who heads Hurriyat faction
spearheading the ongoing “Quit Kashmir Campaign”, marched nearly a
kilometer near Kaka Sarai SHMS here. The rally grew think as people
continued to joint it and people later dispersed off peacefully soon
after the octogenarian’s address.

Second of the biggest congregation, however was held at
Asar-e-Sharif, Dargah Hazratbal, where more than fifty thousand people
offered Friday prayers.

Congregational prayers were also held at Masjid Jamiat-e-Ahlehadith,
Gawkadal; Asar-e-Sharif, Janab Sahib, Soura; Asar-e-Sharif, Shehri
Kalashpora; Ziarat Dastgeer Sahib, Khanyar, Ziarat Dastgeer Sahib,
Sarai Bala; Ziarat-e-Makhdoom Sahib, Khanqah-e-Mualla, and several
other mosques and shrines in Srinagar.

In central Kashmir’s Budgam district, mass rallies were taken in
Ompora, Nagam Chadoora, Main Chowk Budgam, Hyderpora and Khasahib soon
after the congregational Friday prayers.

Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, Mohammad Yaseen Malik
addressed a gathering in Char-e-Sherief in the district.

South Kashmir

Peaceful mass rallies were taken in several Masjids in Islamabad,
Kulgam, Pulwama and the shopian districts. Biggest of the rallies was
witnessed in main Jamia masjid in Islamabad. Thousands of worshipers
offered Friday prayers at Jamia Masjid Ahle-Hadith in Islamabad town.
Large congregations were witnessed also at Jamia Masjid Reshi Bazaar,
Sheikh-ul-Alam Masjid, Masjid Shareef, KMD adda, Masjid Noor, KP Road,
Masjid-e-Baitul Mukarram.

Thousands of people also offered congregational prayers in Pulwama,
Kakapora, Tral, Bijbhera, Nayana, Lasibal, Sernal, Qazigund, Kokernag,
Ka’aba Marg, Asar-e-Sharif Pinjora, and other parts of southern
Kashmir region.

North Kashmir

In north Kashmir’s, large congregations were offered in all the three
districts including Baramulla, Bandipora and frontier Kupwara
district. In Baramulla, large congregations were held in Astan-e-Aliya
Khwaja Sahab, Astan-e-Aliya Janbaaz Wali (RA) and Masjid Baitul
Mukarram.

Reports said that many people took out a mass protest rally from
Baitul Mukarram in main town. Shouting slogans in favour of Islam and
carrying green flags, people marched through lanes and by-lanes before
dispersing off peacefully.

In the Sopore town, the largest congregations were held at Jamia
Masjid, Khanqah-e-Mualla and Tujjar Shrief.

In Kupwara district, reports said, largest congregation was held in
Main town where thousands o people offered the Friday prayers. The
other gathering where witnessed in Bohama, Trehgam, Ragipora,
Rawatpora, Lalpora Lolab and other mosques. In Bandipora,
congregation prayers were held in all the mosques with largest ones
witnessed in Jamia Masjid in Main town and Ajas.

Reports of mass prayers were also received from Ganderbal district
with thousands of people offering the prayers in Main Jamia Masjid in
Duderhama and Jamia Masjid Kangan.




Repeal army's special powers in Kashmir: Civil society

Srinagar, Sept 3: Describing the situation in Kashmir as 'critical and
tragic', a delegation from the civil society, which visited the valley
recently, Friday called for the immediate withdrawal of the
contentious Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and
Kashmir.

Social activist Swami Agnivesh, who led the team, told reporters here
that the people whom the team met in Kashmir 'complained about the
total insensitivity of the central government as well as the people
and media in India to the tragic happenings in Kashmir'.

The other members of the delegation were former chairperson of the
National Commission for Women Mohini Giri, activist and former naval
chief Admiral L. Ramdas, Delhi Catholic diocese spokesperson Father
Dominic Emmanuel and social worker Mazher Hussain.

Agnivesh said the government should immediately take confidence
building measures, including release of all political prisoners and an
independent inquiry into the killing of civilians since the alleged
fake gun battle in Machil in north Kashmir in April this year.

Other demands of the team included withdrawal of the army and
paramilitary forces from the cities and civilian areas and the use of
non-lethal weapons to tackle civilian protests. The team wanted the
government to provide a place for public protest.

Agnivesh said that an all-party parliamentary team should 'visit
Kashmir immediately and reach out to the people and start a process of
reconciliation'.
 
After Lahore, 43 more die in Pak bombings

Islamabad, Sept 3: At least 43 people were killed in powerful
explosions in three different cities in Pakistan Friday, two days
after triple blasts ripped through a religious procession in Lahore
killing 35 people.

In Quetta, capital of Balochistan provice, at least 40 people were
killed and more than 100 injured in a massive blast targeting a Shia
procession. The blast took place near Meezan Chowk in Quetta.

Panic gripped Quetta after the blast as rescue workers shifted the
dead and injured to the hospital. The death toll is feared to rise.

Aaj TV driver Muhammad Sarwar was among the dead while several
cameramen were injured.

A senior police officer said the processionists were asked to disperse
before Meezan chowk but they didn't relent. Angry Shias fired gunshots
in the air after the incident, creating a tense situation.

A van of Dunya TV was also fired at and the windscreen was shattered.

Emergency has been declared in Quetta hospitals. Because of planned
Shia processions across the country after Friday prayers, security was
on high alert.

Security personnel cordoned off the area as the participants of the
procession vent their ire at the authorities.

Earlier in the day, two people were killed and six injured in a blast
at a worship place of the minority Ahmadi community in the Canal Road
area in Mardan town of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

In Peshawar city, a huge explosion ripped through a police van leaving
a policeman dead and three others injured in Achini Bala area,
according to Dawn.

The police van was badly damaged in the remote-controlled explosion.

On Wednesday, three serial blasts within half an hour in Lahore killed
at least 35 people and wounded over 200.

The first blast occurred near Karbala Gamay Shah in Lahore's Lower
Mall area while the second and third blasts were near Bhatti Chowk,
just a few paces away.


One injured in pressure cooker burst

Srinagar: One person namely Abdul Rashid Hajam son of Mohammad Ramzan
resident of Tral Payeen, falling under the jurisdiction of police
station Tral, Awantipora sustained injuries when a pressure cooker
bursted at his home. Injured was shifted to sub district hospital Tral
for treatment where from he was referred to Bones and Joint hospital
Srinagar.

1 killed, 9 injured in mishaps

Srinagar: One person was killed and nine others were injured in two
different road accidents across the Kashmir Valley.

A Sumo bearing registration number JK09/3538 turned turtle near
Changmullah Handwara falling under the jurisdiction of police post
Zachaldara, due to which nine passengers including the driver of the
vehicle got injured. Injured were shifted to sub district hospital
Zachaldara for treatment, later on one person namely Alam Din Gojjar
son of Juma Gojjar resident of Wader Bala succumbed to his injuries.
Police has registered a case in this regard.

An unidentified vehicle hit a Auto Load Carrier bearing registration
number JK04/3243 near Ziyarat Sharief, Kirmani Sahib Lawaypora,
falling under the jurisdiction of police station Parimpora Srinagar,
due to which driver of Auto load carrier namely Imran Ahmad Dar son of
Mohammad Afzal Dar resident of Khushalsar Zadibal got seriously
Injured. Injured was shifted to SKIMS Soura, Srinagar for treatment.
Police has registered a case in this regard.

Leopard mauls girl

Handwara: A minor girl namely Kulsuma aged 12 years daughter of
Mohammad Maqbool Sheikh resident of Dogripora Zachaldara was attacked
and injured by a leopard near Dogripora, Handwara falling under the
jurisdiction of police post Zachaldara. The girl succumbed to her
injuries on way to hospital.


Fire incident

Srinagar: During the intervening night of 02/03.09.2010, fire broke
out in the Spare part shop of Ishfaq Rasool Bhat son of Ghulam Rasool
resident of Nishat at Baghat Barzullah near Jammu and Kashmir Bank,
Baghat falling under the jurisdiction of police station Sadder
